Abstract
Efficient water management is an important challenge in agriculture, particularly in regions
where water resources are limited. Conventional irrigation methods may supply water
according to fixed schedules without considering actual soil and environmental
conditions. This paper proposes an AI-enabled Internet of Things (IoT)-based smart
irrigation management system that combines environmental sensing, machine-learning-
based prediction, and automatic water-pump control. An ESP32 microcontroller is
intended to collect data from soil-moisture, temperature, humidity, water-level, and water-
flow sensors and transmit the readings to an IoT monitoring platform. A machine-learning
model will be developed to estimate soil-moisture conditions and support irrigation
decisions. The system will also incorporate water-level and flow monitoring to identify
abnormal operating conditions. The proposed design aims to improve irrigation scheduling
and reduce unnecessary water usage. Experimental evaluation will be conducted to
assess prediction performance, control reliability, and water-use efficiency after system
implementation.

- Introduction
Agriculture requires effective water management to support crop growth while minimizing
unnecessary water consumption. Traditional irrigation practices may rely on fixed
schedules or manual decisions, which do not always reflect changing soil-moisture and
environmental conditions.
The Internet of Things enables real-time collection and communication of agricultural
sensor data. Microcontrollers such as the ESP32 can process sensor readings and
communicate with online monitoring platforms. Machine-learning techniques can further
analyze historical and current measurements to support irrigation planning.
This research proposes an integrated smart irrigation system that combines IoT sensing,
predictive analysis, automated pump control, and fault monitoring. The intended
contribution is an integrated approach to irrigation decision-making that considers both
predicted soil conditions and actual sensor readings.
2. Problem Statement
Fixed-schedule irrigation can result in unnecessary watering when soil moisture is already
sufficient, or insufficient watering when environmental conditions increase crop water
requirements. Limited monitoring of water flow and tank levels can also make it difficult to
identify interruptions or abnormal operating conditions.
Therefore, an intelligent irrigation system is needed to combine real-time sensing,
predictive analysis, automated control, and water-system monitoring in a unified
framework.
3. Research Objectives
The main objectives of the proposed system are:
-
To develop an ESP32-based platform for collecting agricultural sensor data.
-
To monitor soil moisture, temperature, humidity, water level, and water flow.
-
To develop a machine-learning model to estimate soil-moisture conditions and
irrigation requirements. -
To implement automatic water-pump control based on sensor measurements and
prediction results. -
To integrate an IoT dashboard for monitoring sensor values and irrigation status.
-
To detect abnormal water-flow conditions and insufficient water availability.
-
To evaluate prediction performance, control reliability, and water-use efficiency
through experiments. -
Literature Review
Previous research has explored the integration of IoT technologies and machine learning
for smart irrigation management. These studies demonstrate how sensor measurements
and environmental information can support soil-moisture prediction and irrigation
scheduling.
4.1 IoT-Based Smart Irrigation
IoT-based irrigation systems use sensors to collect agricultural data and microcontrollers
to transmit the measurements to monitoring platforms. Such systems can help users
monitor soil conditions and irrigation operations remotely.
4.2 Machine Learning for Soil-Moisture Prediction
Machine-learning techniques can analyze historical and real-time sensor measurements
to estimate soil-moisture conditions. The usefulness of these models depends on dataset
quality, suitable input features, correct training procedures, and independent testing.
4.3 Research Gap
The proposed project aims to integrate sensor-based monitoring, machine-learning-
assisted irrigation decisions, automatic pump control, and water-flow monitoring within
one system. The effectiveness and originality of this integrated approach must be
evaluated against existing research and through practical experiments. -
Proposed Methodology
The proposed system consists of five main stages.
5.1 Sensor Data Acquisition
Sensors will collect soil-moisture, temperature, humidity, water-level, and water-flow
measurements. These readings will provide information about soil and environmental
conditions and the availability of irrigation water.
5.2 Data Processing
The ESP32 will acquire the sensor readings and transmit relevant measurements to the
monitoring platform. Data will be checked for missing values, invalid readings, and
measurement inconsistencies.
5.3 Machine-Learning Prediction
A suitable machine-learning model will be trained and evaluated using an appropriate
dataset. The selected model will estimate soil-moisture conditions or irrigation
requirements, depending on the available data and validated target variable.
The dataset will be divided into training and testing subsets. Model selection will be based
on suitable evaluation metrics and comparison with a baseline approach.
5.4 Irrigation Decision and Pump Control
The control algorithm will combine sensor readings with the model output to determine
whether irrigation is required. A suitable driver or relay interface will control the pump,
subject to appropriate electrical and water-level safety conditions.
5.5 Monitoring and Fault Detection
An IoT dashboard will display sensor readings, predicted conditions, pump status, and
alerts. Water-flow and water-level measurements will be used to identify potential
abnormalities, including insufficient water availability and unexpected flow conditions.
6. System Design and Implementation
The proposed architecture includes a sensing unit, processing unit, prediction unit, pump-
control unit, and monitoring dashboard.
The sensing unit collects soil and environmental measurements. The ESP32 acts as the
central processing and communication controller. The machine-learning component
analyzes the available data and supports irrigation decisions. The pump-control unit
executes the selected action, while the dashboard provides information about sensor
values and system status.
During implementation, the sensor connections, calibration procedures, communication
reliability, and pump-control interface will be tested individually before evaluating the
complete system.
7. Results and Discussion
7.1 Current Development Status
The proposed system is currently under development. The architecture and experimental
evaluation plan have been defined, but the complete prototype has not yet been tested
under documented experimental conditions.
Consequently, actual sensor measurements, machine-learning evaluation metrics, pump-
control accuracy, and water-saving results are not yet available.
7.2 Illustrative Sensor Readings
Table 1 provides simulated examples to illustrate how sensor data could be presented in
the completed study. These values are hypothetical and are not measurements collected
from the physical system.

Table 1. Simulated sensor readings for demonstration purposes only.
The illustrative table demonstrates a possible relationship between soil-moisture readings
and irrigation decisions. In the actual implementation, the pump-control decision will
depend on calibrated sensor measurements, the selected irrigation threshold, crop
requirements, and the validated control algorithm.
7.3 Machine-Learning Model Evaluation
The machine-learning component will be evaluated after the dataset has been prepared
and the model has been trained and tested.
For regression tasks, Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) may
be used to measure prediction errors. For classification tasks, accuracy, precision, recall,
and F1-score may be appropriate.
The final model will be compared with a baseline method using an independent test
dataset. Numerical performance values will be reported only after the evaluation has been
completed.
7.4 Irrigation Control Performance
The irrigation-control mechanism will be tested under different soil-moisture and water-
availability conditions. Testing will examine whether the pump activates when irrigation is
required and deactivates when the defined stopping condition is reached.
The evaluation will record correct activations, incorrect activations, missed irrigation
events, and successful pump deactivations. These observations will be used to determine
control reliability.
7.5 Water-Use Evaluation
The water-saving potential of the proposed system will be assessed by comparing its water
consumption with a clearly defined baseline irrigation method under comparable
conditions.
Water savings can be calculated using the following equation:
Water Savings (%) = [(Baseline Water Use − Smart System Water Use) / Baseline Water
Use] × 100
Water consumption must be measured over comparable observation periods and under
similar conditions. The calculated percentage will be reported only after sufficient
experimental measurements have been collected.
7.6 Discussion
The proposed design combines real-time sensing, machine-learning-assisted prediction,
automatic pump control, and water-flow monitoring. These components are intended to
support irrigation decisions that respond to actual soil and environmental conditions
rather than relying exclusively on fixed schedules.
Water-level and water-flow monitoring may also provide information about low-water
conditions and abnormal operation. However, reliable fault detection requires testing
under controlled normal and abnormal operating conditions.
The actual benefits of the system will depend on sensor calibration, dataset quality, model
performance, irrigation thresholds, and the reliability of the pump-control mechanism.
Experimental validation is therefore necessary before conclusions can be drawn about
prediction accuracy or water savings.
7.7 Limitations
The current study presents a proposed system design and an experimental evaluation
plan. The simulated sensor readings are included only to illustrate the presentation of data
and do not demonstrate the performance of a physical prototype.
Further work is required to complete implementation, collect real sensor measurements,
train and evaluate the machine-learning model, test automatic pump control, and
measure water consumption under defined conditions.
8. Expected Contributions

predictions can support adaptive irrigation management.
The intended contributions include:

Integration of multiple environmental and water-monitoring sensors with an ESP32
controller. -
